ABS-CBN franchise renewal denied - Android

The House of Representative Committee on Legislative Franchises, after a couple of hearings, has denied the media giant’s franchise bid this Friday, July 10, 2020.

Rep. Franz Alvarez from the first district of Palawan and House committee chairperson announced that a huge majority of lawmakers, 70 to be exact, voted to accept the report of the technical working group’s (TWG) that recommends the denial of ABS-CBN’s franchise application.

That number overwhelmed the 11 representatives who voted against it, while two of them inhibited, and one abstained. With 85 members, it would only take 43 votes to get the majority.

This basically means that ABS-CBN Corporation has been denied the franchise to contruct, install, operate, establish, and maintain radio and broadcasting stations in the country.

House Deputy Minority Leader and ex Officio member Carlo Zarate said that the media giant could still refile a new bill, which will undergo the same process that the previous denied bills went through.

Zarate added that lawmakers who voted with the majority — in this case, those who voted against ABS-CBN’s franchise — could also file a for a motion of reconsideration, which will be heard on the same meeting “if raised in the same meeting, or if it is raised on the same day on writing, it should be calendar by the committee for a hearing.”
