After acquiring Lazada, one of the Philippines’ biggest e-commerce platforms, in 2016, the Alibaba Group is seeking to expand its business further through more investments. Concrete details about the plan, however, remains undisclosed.

Alibaba’s president for international business, Selina Yuan, claims that the Philippines makes for a “very important” market for the company to which it will capitalize on by focusing on its most valuable resource—the local personnel as well as partners through training and “technical enablement.”

To date, Yuan says that Alibaba has already trained at least 5,000 people as part of the endeavor and will continue to do so over the perception of untapped talents among their local employees.

According to country manager, Allen Guo, Alibaba is keen on training thousands until 2023, with some focus on Alibaba Cloud, which the company regards as the “backbone” of the enterprise’s “economy” where certain key products and services are dependent on.
