Since iOS 7, Apple users have been transferring files across iPhones, iPads and Macs easily thanks to the AirDrop wireless sharing feature. Android will have a feature with similar capability, but on a much larger scale.
The Android Nearby Sharing makes use of various wireless technologies, such as Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi, so that users can share files between devices in proximity. What sets it apart from AirDrop is the extent of devices that can make use of the feature.
A keen-eyed user recently spotted a new, work-in-progress setting in the latest experimental build of Chrome OS. Clues in the feature’s source code and description indicate compatibility with computers that have the Google Chrome browser installed.
So, Nearby Sharing will work not only across Android phones and tablets but also across Windows, Mac and other devices with Google Chrome. In comparison, AirDrop is exclusive to just Apple devices.
There’s no official word yet when Nearby Sharing will release.
