Following a dismaying failed initial implementation arising from the cost of the transition to the average commuters, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered to give away the Beep cards for FREE, beginning Friday, October 9, according to Transportation Assistant Secretary Goddes Libiran.
Facilitating the order is the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) who has sent out memorandum circular making Beep cards accessible to commuters for free.
By virtue of the initiative, it will cut the burden of the cost of the card to the average traveler which would otherwise cost them Php80. That’s the expense for the card alone and does not include other expenditures that are accrued as part of the new payment scheme, that is, the required fare load and the corresponding “convenience fee” worth Php5.
Part also of the amendment is the removal of the originally imposed maintaining balance of Php65, which means that Beep card users can now preload with whatever amount they want instead of paying a fixed fee every time.
