The Department of Information and Telecommunications Technology (DICT) shows its support in the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) move to streamline the issuance of permits for fiber optic cables rollout and installation in the country.
NTC’s initiative is similar to the Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1 s. 2020, which helps streamline the permit, certificate, and license acquisition for building common towers.
Now, the agency wants to apply the same rule in installing fiber optic cables. Fiber cables and wireless medium are two of the most critical components that will improve the Philippines’ internet speed.
In a statement, DICT secretary Gregorio B. Honasan II said that they are supporting any initiative that will complement its National Broadband Program, a government-owned broadband network that will benefit its agencies.
Other than DICT, NTC also wrote to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), and Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD). The letter says that the JMC No.1 for the common towers was proven effective and led to improvements in wireless coverage and technologies.
The NTC is currently talking with the DPWH to possibly amend the D.O No.73 s. 2014, covering the guidelines for right-of-way fiber optic cables’ installation on public roads and bridges.
