In an attempt to go after bogus online sellers, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is asking Facebook to give its consumer protection group access to the social media giant’s database of online sellers.

Currently, those kind of information is only accessible to enforcement authorities.

As per DTI secretary Ramon Lopez, Facebook should strengthen its consumer protection programs now that that the e-commerce activity in the country is growing.

Facebook users should also be aware of Facebook’s consumer protection programs.

Other than Facebook, the trade secretary said that they are also talking with Google, and e-commerce brands such as Lazada and Shopee, to assist small, medium, and micro enterprises to take their businesses online. The increased exposure will help SMEs to reach more markets and grow their businesses.

Lopez added that there are already 13,000 local establishments registered with Google, giving them access to the platform’s numerous business solutions. One of those is being listed in Google Maps, one of the most-used location apps in the market.
