The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) had some good news about the internet situation in the Philippines.
DICT cited Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index, which shows that the average fixed broadband download speed in the Philippines is now at 46.25Mbps — the fastest it’s been since 2016, the department points out.
That’s a 7.79Mbps improvement over the 38.46Mbps record from March and a 20.25Mbps jump from February.
Although we’re up 11 places as we’re now at the 81st spot, it’s obvious that we’re still way behind in global rankings.
In fact, neighboring countries like Singapore and Thailand took first and second places.
Despite that, it looks like DICT remains optimistic. In a statement, it’s said that the March 2021 numbers represent a whopping 484.70% increase compared to the figures back in 2016.
The government continues its efforts to improve the internet speed in the Philippines. Just recently, the DICT backs DPWH’s initiative to allow telcos to use a portion of government rights of way to build internet infrastructures.
Both the DICT and the senate also want to pass a bill to mandate telcos to give refunds in service interruptions.
