Over a year ago, Huawei launched its very own in-house operating system called HarmonyOS. Giving a keynote address today at the annual Huawei Developer Conference, CEO Richard Yu revealed the new HarmonyOS 2.0, which will soon be available to more devices.

The operating system is built from the ground with cross-platform functionality, with support for smartwatches, smart TVs, vehicle head units, and smartphones. According to Yu, the first handsets that will be powered by Huawei’s own operating system is expected next year. Although, no further details were given. From all indications, it will initially be limited to China.

Starting today, the HarmonyOS 2.0 SDK for car head units, smart watches, and smart TVs will be available while the one for smartphones is expected to be released by December.

Huawei has also disclosed its project called OpenHarmony, an open-source version of HarmonyOS which has some similarities with Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The company says it will be able to support devices with as little as 128KB of RAM.

HMS-Core-5-0

HarmonyOS 2.0 is meant to work on a broad range of devices, thanks to its multi-screen functionality and seamless continuity, in addition to its adaptive UX elements. Huawei is also trying to have fast and smooth cross-device data transfers, smart voice recognition, and improved security.

Details of the HMS Core 5.0 was also released, which has more than 12,000 APIs and over 7 service categories.
