Last Monday - November 23, 2020, I messaged one of our friends from Smart Communications and requested if I could have my Smart Prepaid SIM card be 5G-enabled since I'm now receiving several 5G smartphones for review and I wanted to check data speeds on the handsets once they are connected to the said network.
To my surprise, our friend from Smart told me that there's no need for my Smart SIM to be activated for 5G because "all Smart subscribers are now [automatically] provisioned for 5G".
He added that as long as the user's smartphone is 5G-enabled and he or she is in a Smart 5G-Zone, the subscriber should automatically be able to enjoy Smart's ultra-fast 5G data speeds.
Likewise, he said that subscribers may confirm if their Smart Prepaid or Postpaid SIM card has been activated for 5G by sending SIMCHECK to 5832 as shown in the image below.
Currently, Smart has 5G-zones in Makati CBD, Ortigas, Ateneo de Manila Campus, Araneta City, Bonifacio Global City CBD, SM Megamall, Mall of Asia Bay, Taft Avenue in Manila, and select areas in Boracay, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, and Clark City Pampanga.
5G is the latest generation in mobile broadband standard, superseding 4G LTE. 5G speeds range from 1GBps to a whopping 20GBps. In June 2018, PLDT's wireless arm was able to get speeds of 14Gbps from its Smart 5G TechnoLab tests.
