The use of a strong and one-time password can be utilized on most digital platforms through a valid email address or an active mobile number for an added layer of security. Many experts have highlighted that re-using your old password is inadequate to keep your accounts secure, because hackers may use it to access important information and services such as your bank.

What is a one-time password (OTP) and why should you use it?

You should use one-time passwords because it will ask for another passcode after the hacker places a valid email-password combination. As a form of two-factor verification process, OTPs gives you the best secondary form of protection.

The OTP will be sent either to the linked email address or the mobile number registered. Nonetheless, it is better to use a mobile number as it’s with the user physically unless it’s stolen and you have not set up a screen lock or PIN for it. Hackers may have access to the email linked to your account as you might be using the same account’s passowrd.

Digital platforms where OTPs can be activated

Facebook

Step 1: If you are using a browser, select the small arrow icon located at the upper right corner of the Facebook screen. For a mobile app, select the hamburger icon from the menu or the three horizontal and parallel bars on the upper right corner of the screen.

Step 2: Select ‘Settings’.

Step 3: Click ‘Security and Login’.

Step 4: Scroll downwards until you see the ‘Two-Factor Authentication’. Then, select ‘Use Two-Factor Authentication’ from the options.

Step 5: You will be asked to choose to either get the OTP from the third-party app for authentication purposes or via a text message on your registered mobile number.

If you will be using an app for an authenticator, Facebook will display a QR code with an activation number. Next, you have to download the ‘Google Authenticator’ app to scan the displayed QR code and key in the activation number that has been generated. Select the ‘+’ icon on the lower right corner of your screen as you will be needed to scan the displayed QR and type the activation number.

Google

Step 1: Proceed to the Account page of Google.

Step 2: Select ‘Security’ on the left part of the screen with a lock icon.

Step 3: Once you see the ‘Signing in to Google’ dashboard, select the ‘Two-step verification’.

Step 4: Select ‘Get Started’.

Step 5: You will be asked to key in your password on the next page. Click the ‘Voice or text message’ option from the selections. Key in your mobile number and choose the OTP option.

Step 6: You will receive a temporary OTP from Google which you will have to type it in to set up your permanent password.

Twitter

Step 1: Select ‘More’ from the left corner of your Twitter screen on a browser. For mobile apps, select ‘Settings and Privacy’.

Step 2: Select the ‘Two-Factor Authentication’ from the ‘Security’ in the account settings.

Step 3: Select from one of the methods for verification from the selection. Choose from the authentication app, test message, or security key. The security key lets you log in to your Twitter account easily using a physical USB for browser users. Mobile users can’t use this at the moment.

Step 4: Follow the instructions on your selected method.

Instagram

Step 1: Select ‘Settings’ on your profile on the ‘cog’ icon found on the hamburger icon on the mobile application.

Step 2: Select ‘Privacy & Security’ and ‘Two-Factor Authentication’.

Step 3: Click ‘Edit Two-Factor Authentication’. Choose whether ‘authentication app’ or via text message.

Step 4: Follow the instructions on your selected method and tick the box to confirm.
