CEO of Huawei, Richard Yu, talked extensively about the upcoming Mate 40 phones during the 2020 China Information Technology Summit. He also spoke about the next flagship chipset and the challenges of supply, as a result of the trade war between China and US.

It is expected that the Kirin 1000 series chipset will be unveiled early September at IFA, before its debut on the Huawei Mate 40 series. It will be 5nm chip based on the CPU core Cortex-A78, fabbed by TSMC. The Mate 40s will probably be the last phone to have the Kirin chipset.

As scheduled, the US government will block TSMC’s chip manufacturing for Huawei by September. To make sure they have enough supplies, Huawei will be securing enough chips to put on about 15 million Mate 40s.

Yu did not give any clue as to how the company will source for a new chipset once that supply runs out.

According to the CEO, Huawei shipped about 105 million smartphones in the first half of 2020, amounting to about CNY 255.8 billion of generated revenue. He also confirmed that Huawei’s number of units shipped in the second quarter of the year surpassed Samsung’s.
