Moving a tier higher from entry-level smartphones to lower midrange devices often grants users a lot of value, offering a better chipset, better display, more memory, and better build quality.

Since release, the Samsung Galaxy A30s has always been easy to recommend. Can Huawei’s new Y7p challenge the throne? Find out here:

Design and Build

The Huawei Y7p comes in a beautiful two-tone glossy back that creates a prism effect when struck by light. It comes with a thick, polycarbonate matte frame that adds to its sturdiness and build quality. Lastly, it comes with a thin, pre-installed screen protector out of the box.

The Samsung Galaxy A30s, on the other hand, has a glossy black back that also creates a prism effect when struck by light. It’s a lot sleeker than the Huawei Y7p, offering users a lot of comfort and ease of use. Unlike the more affordable A10s, the Galaxy A30s does have a plastic frame.

Both devices also differ in biometrics, with the Huawei Y7p using a rear-mounted scanner, and the Samsung Galaxy A30s uses an in-display scanner. While both are accurate in my testing, the physical rear-mounted scanner was noticeably faster.

For this category, we’re giving the Huawei Y7p a narrow victory, thanks to its eye-catching color gradient aesthetic and thicker frame which adds to the build quality. Especially at this price bracket, making sure your investment lasts a long time despite accidental drops is crucial.

Display and Multimedia

While both phones have an HD+ display, the Samsung Galaxy A30s offers users better display quality thanks to its Super AMOLED display. It’s brighter, has better colors, and gives users the benefits of having an AMOLED display.

That being said, the Huawei Y7p’s display is not terrible at all. You also get the benefit of having a punch-hole on the corner of the screen, giving you a better viewing experience. It also offers users better audio experience thanks to its louder, clearer sound.

We’re giving the win to the Samsung Galaxy A30s here, as viewing content on the Super AMOLED display was much better compared to the IPS display on the Huawei Y7p.

Camera

When it comes to camera quality, both devices are capable of taking good photos. Still, the Huawei Y7p takes it a step further, with more details, brighter shots (without being overexposed), and a night mode that captures more detail without adding too much noise. That being said, the Samsung Galaxy A30’s camera also performed well, capturing more true-to-life colors, and great subject-background blur.

Selfies, on the other hand, are comparable between the two devices.
