According to this report, the incoming Huawei Mate 40 series will be the last smartphone to come with a Kirin chipset. The revelation was made by Huawei consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong at a conference in China.

In a speech, CEO Yu Chengdong said they can no longer manufacture Kirin chipsets after September 15, the day the US ban on the supply of Huawei chips will take effect.

TSMC manufactures Kirin chipsets using equipment with US technology. Recent rules set by the Trump administration will prevent the company from further manufacturing the chips for Huawei.

While the loss of Kirin chipsets is a blow to the Chinese company, it does not, however, prevent Huawei devices (such as smartphones, routers, switches and other hardware) from using chips designed by other manufacturers (like MediaTek), even if they’re using US American technology. 

In recent years, Huawei has made massive strides with its Kirin chipsets. The Kirin 980, for instance, was the world’s first 7nm process mobile phone SoC with the world’s first dual NPU design. These milestones, in a way, helped propel the chip industry to push innovation further, to make better, faster, more power efficient, feature-rich chipsets.

Despite the setback, its interesting to see how Huawei will move forward. The company is not known to give up easily. And with its long history of innovation, it wouldn’t be stretch for them to find a way back.
