The Land Transportation Office (LTO) is implementing a safety measure that will prohibit children below the age of 12 to take front seat effective tomorrow, as per Republic Act 11229 or the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act.

To coincide with the implementation of the law, the LTO claims that it will also launch a massive information drive, lasting between two to six months, in order to guarantee its smooth enforcement. Coincidentally, the agency and its subsidiaries will not immediately issue sanctions to those who may violate the law during such time.

In a virtual press briefing conducted by Buckle Up Kids PH last Friday, deputy director of the LTO Law Enforcement Service, Robert Valera, claims that they will be on “the warning mode and information dissemination” about said law. In particular, towards parents who have to be informed regarding the gravity of the enacted change on the road.

As per RA 11229, the driver has the responsibility to amply secure a juvenile passenger in a restraint seat, unless the child is tall enough (4.92 feet) to be guaranteed safety by a regular belt.

When penalties are in effect, the law will see lawbreakers a fine of Php1,000 on first offense; Php2,000 on second offense; or a Php5,000 fine and a year-long suspension of driver’s license on the third offense.
