Lawsuit alleges Apple deliberately releasing iOS updates that slow down iPhone performance - Android

The lawsuit is from the Portuguese Consumer Protection Agency, Deco Proteste. As per the suit, Apple has “deliberately manipulated, and without informing its users, the performance of its most popular devices.”

As per the suit, it appears that Apple is doing this on purpose to force its users to replace their battery or the smartphone as a whole.

Particularly, the agency is referencing the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus. However, the agency said that any Portuguese user could join in whatever iPhone model they have.

The agency is also pointing to the iOS 11 update as the beginning of the case. It is said that Apple is aware that the update will have “considerable impacts on iPhone performance” but still encouraged its users to update. In return, the agency said that those who updated ended up with a slow phone, with a “weak performance and unexpected blackouts.”

Dubbed as “programmed obsolescence”, Deco Proteste and Euroconsumer have been attempting to come up with a resolution for affected users in the last three years.

Reports about Apple deliberately slowing down iPhones via software updates are not new. Apple defended by saying that slowing down iPhone was necessary to protect the hardware as the battery degrades.

Back in 2020, the company agreed to pay USD500 million to settle a related lawsuit.
