Lazada, Shopee sign agreement to help end the sale of fake items - Android

Signed alongside a couple of global and local brands, the MOU details that Lazada and Shopee, in a timely and efficient manner, will restrict the sale of counterfeit or fake items on their respective platforms once the actual brand owners have reported them.

The MOU also says that the two e-commerce platforms are now required to keep data of all its sellers, verify their identity, and share required information of alleged infringers’ identities if requested by government regulators or ordered by the court.

If proven guilty, accused sellers will be suspended or will have their accounts permanently closed.

Brands such as GlaxoSmithKline, Unilever Philippines, Globe Telecom, American Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, and the Philippine Retailers Association are some of the brands and intellectual property rights holders that signed the memorandum.

As per Assistant Secretary Mary Jean Pacheco of the Department of Trade and Industry, the MOU is a strong start to boost business and consumer confidence towards e-commerce.

Still, Pacheco expressed that stronger regulations is still needed.

That’s where Senate Bill 1591, or the proposed Internet Transactions Act, will be helpful. Once passed as a law, the Trade Department will have regulatory powers to take down platforms and websites that sell counterfeit products.
