EcoWaste Coalition, along with over 150 public interest groups, has published an online letter that calls on Shopee, Lazada, and other e-shopping sites to get their act together in eliminating plastic waste from packaging and products.

Unless you purely shop offline, you may recall Shopee and Lazada recently had their November 11 sales promo, with the latter gladly reporting record-breaking sales. Now, imagine how many single-use packaging and plastic wastes those sales have created and the impact they make on the environment.

According to the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), as reported by Ecowaste, 48 million shopping bags, 45 million thin-film bags, 163 million plastic sachet packets, and so many plastic products are the major sources of pollution in the Philippines.

In the letter, Ecowaste strongly advocates for a plastic-free shopping experience. The coalition also calls for online retailers to be transparent on their plastic footprint, adopt policies on waste prevention and reduction, and transition to ecologically-safe packaging alternatives.
