Last Friday, August 28, Elon Musk unveiled its brain implant prototype created with Neuralink, the tech billionaire’s neurotechnology company.

In a livestreamed presentation (watch below), Musk detailed Neuralink’s new machine and even demonstrated an early prototype of the gadget that was implanted on a pig. Musk refers to it like “a Fitbit in your skull with tiny wires.”

The overall goal of this technology is to help the medical field cure related illnesses like blindness, quadriplegia, psychosis, mood swings, memory loss — and to help humanity achieve “symbiosis with artificial intelligence”. It should also let people control their phones and computers using their brains.

So, how does it work? The circular chip will be placed in a coin-sized hole that will be cut on the skull, near the ears.

Elon Musk demoed the technology through a pig named Gertrude, who apparently undergone the trial of installing the device successfully. There’s a tag near Gertrude’s ear where the device might have been installed.

The tech tycoon also showcased its sewing machine-like robot that should accurately install the device to the brain. As per Musk, the robot was built to dodge sensitive blood vessels.

Moreover, each chip are custom-built to each individual’s neurological spikes. The new prototype is the upgraded version of the device he presented last summer.

It goes without saying that there are people who are unconvinced or feeling sketchy about this very ambitious project. Some are citing possible bad side effects like cancer, psychosis, etc. — which are, ironically, the problems this brain implant is trying to fix.
