OPPO and Vivo are two of the most popular midrange brands in the market. And today, we’ll be comparing two of their top-dogs in the category to see which one is actually better and worth your money.

First, we have the OPPO Reno 4. With its specs list that appeals to the market, and great availability record for everyone to get a hold of for, it’s definitely one of the most-heard midrange smartphones in the market today.

On the other hand, its competition has the Vivo X50 to go against. Spoiler alert, it costs more than the Reno 4.

To justify its price, the X50 has a couple of better specs and features than the former — edging to be a high-end smartphone.

Design and Build Quality

Both the Reno 4 and Vivo X50 look and feels similar in the hands. But personally, the camera layout on the back of the X50 makes it look more unique than the Galaxy Note 20-like camera design of the Reno 4.

Although, the Reno 4 is noticeably lighter than the latter. It’s only at 165g, while the other is at 181.5g.

Both devices have thin bezels on the front, made possible by their AMOLED screens and the punch-hole cameras. But since the Reno 4 has dual selfie cameras, it has a slightly wider screen cutout than the single front sensor of the X50.

And since it’s the more expensive model, the X50 gets to have an aluminum frame. Although, they do share the same plastic back panel.

Display and Audio

Here’s where the Vivo X50 flexes its higher price tag. As you can see, both handsets share identical FHD+ AMOLED panels. But where the Vivo device shines is with its smooth 90Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, and DCI-P3 coverage.

The X50 also lacks a headphone jack, which is apparently a cool feature that high-end smartphones have. So if plugging a pair of non-wireless earphones is very important to you, then you’re better off with the Reno 4.

On the upside, the X50 does have Hi-Res audio. What’s disappointing is they both lack a stereo speaker setup.

Hardware and Peformance

The OPPO Reno 4 is powered by the latest 2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor, while the Vivo X50 comes with an older Snapdragon 730.

Their branding will suggest that the Snapdragon 730 is more powerful. But since it’s older, the latest Snapdragon 720G can actually match its performance.

In real-world scenarios, the difference in performance between the OPPO Reno 4 and Vivo X50 would be barely visible. Although, the 90Hz refresh would surely make things smoother for the X50.

Probably the main deal-breaker for the X50 is the lack of a microSD card slot for future storage expansion, which the Reno 4 has.

Camera

This is where the X50 really shines. As you can see, it has an optical image stabilizer (OIS), a feature that you’d only normally see on high-end phones. It also has a brighter f/1.6 aperture, while the competition settles for a 48-megapixel f/1.7 sensor.

The Vivo X50 also has a dedicated 13-megapixel lens that can do 2x of optical zoom, which is great for taking portraits. There’s also the sharper 5-megapixel macro camera. You can check out its camera samples in our full review.

On the front, both devices have 32-megapixel selfie cameras, but the Reno 4 will try to lure you in with its secondary 2-megapixel depth sensor. Personally, we’d still go with the X50 for its superb main camera.

Battery

The Vivo X50 takes a slight lead over the OPPO Reno 4 in this department. As you can see, it has a 4,200mAh capacity, which is only a tad bit larger than the 4,015mAh of the competition.

It also has a 33W FlashCharge 2.0 charger, which is marginally faster than the 30W VOOC Flash Charge of the competition. Although, since the X50 has a more power-hungry 90Hz screen, so battery longevity might be shorter on this thing.

Conclusion

Before we conclude, let’s take a look at their prices. The OPPO Reno 4 is priced at Php18,990, while the Vivo X50 costs about Php7,000 more at Php25,999.

So, should you spend an extra Php7,000 for the X50? Well, if a fast 90Hz screen and a killer camera with OIS is really important to you, then sure, go with the Vivo X50.

Personally, we’d settle with the OPPO Reno 4. The price premium for the X50 is just not worth it. And besides, the processing and battery performance between the two is almost the same, which is what’s more important to most people.
