OPPO is a known name for camera-focused smartphones, and recently, the company launched its newest addition to the Reno series, the Reno5 5G. Now, without further ado, let’s dive into our review!
Let’s talk about the design. The OPPO Reno5 5G achieves a glossy plastic finish with some gradient effect and a metal frame on the sides. Our unit is in the Starry Night color but is also available in Moon Night Black and the stylish Aurora Blue.
Upfront, we get a punch-hole on the screen’s upper left side, housing its front shooter. We also get the call speaker here. The phone has a vibrant OLED screen with slim bezels and a slightly thicker chin.
Now for buttons and ports, we have the power/lock button on the right side. While on the left, we have the volume buttons and the dual SIM tray. They’re made out of plastic, but they’re firm and clicky.
Up top, there’s the secondary microphone.
Meanwhile, down at the bottom are the 3.5mm audio jack, primary microphone, USB-C port, and loudspeaker.
Flipping on its back, it looks almost the same as the OPPO Reno4, especially with the camera placement. So far, the Reno5 5G’s design has no huge difference from its predecessor.
We still like the color options, especially the Aurora Blue, which is unique and more stylish. In the hands, it feels functional, lightweight, and has a good grip.
Moving to its display, the Reno5 5G sports a 6.43-inch screen with Full HD+ resolution and a pixel density of 410ppi. It has a crisp and vibrant display, plus, it is also equipped with a 90Hz refresh rate so you can enjoy smooth animations and transitions. Its brightness level is decent, too, as you can still see the screen well at max brightness under direct sunlight.
As for audio quality, the single down-firing loudspeaker is loud enough to fill a room; however, you only have one speaker. So, if your finger happens to block the other corner more often, we recommend you use your earphones.
Now for cameras. The Reno5 5G sports a quad-camera setup consisting of a 64MP main, an 8MP ultrawide, a 2MP macro, and a 2MP depth. Meanwhile, for selfies, you get a 32MP shooter.
In proper lighting conditions, images produced sharp details with accurate color reproduction. For portrait mode, background separation is good. It blurs out the background very well while preserving the details. For macro shots, it is quite impressive as details are sharp and colors are still accurate. On the other hand, lowlight shots are good but note that you’ll need a tripod or super steady hand when you use the Night Mode. Details are not that sharp, but it is present. Shots tend to look hazy, depending on the lighting.
When it comes to selfies, it captures great images and produces accurate color reproduction. Turning the AI beauty mode on, the skin looks pretty natural when it’s at the recommended setting.
As for videos, you can shoot up to 4K at 30 frames per second. Quality is decent and would suffice if you want to make vlogs or cinematic shorts. It also comes with Ultra Steady Mode if you wish for a more stabilized video.
For slow-mo, it can shoot up to 1080p, and it’s quite impressive as details are still present.
And lastly, Reno5 5G also introduces the Dual-View Video, which can simultaneously be used in both the front and rear cameras, providing two perspectives within the same frame in videos.
As for software, it runs on Android 11 out of the box with ColorOS 11.1 skinned on top; there is still some bloatware, but you can opt to uninstall it whenever you want. You can also personalize the icons, hide app names, app animation speed, and on-screen buttons for navigation. There’s also an Always-on Display, color scheme, and dark-mode to customize the phone.
Out of the 128GB of storage, we get a usable 112GB out of the box.
For performance, powering the OPPO Reno5 5G is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G octa-core CPU, Adreno 620 GPU, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 128GB/256GB of storage. When it comes to day-to-day tasks like browsing the web and navigating around social media, it is smooth throughout. We tried playing graphics-heavy games such as Asphalt 9 and Genshin Impact, and while gaming, we don’t encounter hiccups while using the highest settings but take note that the phone does heat up a little, but it’s not that bothersome.
For biometrics and security, you can unlock the phone through facial recognition and an in-display fingerprint scanner. Both methods work pretty quickly.
For benchmarks, check out the scores right now:
• AnTuTu – 330,073
• Geekbench – 607 (Single-core), 1,749 (Multi-core), 1,258 (OpenCL)
• 3D Mark – 3,229 (SSE – OpenGL ES 3.1) 3,054 (SSE – Vulkan)
• PC Mark – 7,857 (Work 2.0)
• AndroBench – 965.89 MB/s (Sequential Read), 453.6 MB/s (Sequential Write)
The OPPO Reno5 comes with connectivity features such as NFC, 4G LTE, 5G, Bluetooth 5.1, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm jack.
The device gets a 4,300mAh capacity with support for SuperVOOC 2.0 65W fast charging. We ran it through the PCMark’s battery test, and we got a total of 14 hours and 15 minutes. Meanwhile, in our standard video loop test, which entails the phone being at 50% brightness, 50% volume, Airplane mode turned on, and with headphones plugged-in, the device lasted a longer 13 hours and 45 minutes.
The phone can last at least a day if you’re not a heavy user, and it takes more than an hour to charge this up with the SuperVOOC 2.0 65W included charger.
The Reno5 5G is one device packed with some impressive specs for something that costs PHP 23,999. We can say that it can be a hot pick based on its excellent camera performance. There is support for a 90Hz high refresh rate and good battery life. Yes, there are many good devices in the market around this price range, but the Reno5 5G is undoubtedly not one to be missed out on.
