OPPO has been at the forefront of battery technologies. The brand has been using its proprietary VOOC technology in its devices and even launched one in Mobile World Congress (MWC) back in 2016. That is why it did not come as surprise when OPPO held an event solely for charging technologies. The star of the event is, as you may guess, is the 125W Flash Charge.
The 125W charge sounds pretty impressive. According to OPPO, it can fully charge a 4,000mAh battery in only 20 minutes. The technology is also compatible with the older SuperVOOC and VOOC chargers. In addition, 125W Flash Charge supports more common charging methods like 65W PD.
However, just like anything in this world, there would always be a downside. In this case, the new technology may affect the device’s battery capacity in the long-run.
OPPO noted that the battery capacity of a smartphone using a 125W Flash charge remains at 80% after 800 full charging cycles, which is equivalent to around two (2) years of actual usage. It means that you may lose one-fifth of your battery in two years. There are various ways to mitigate this like not draining your phone’s battery. Moreover, if you only use your smartphone minimally, you may extend those two years.
Regardless, OPPO’s newly launched battery tech shortens battery capacity faster than its other technologies. OPPO said that the 65W wired charging found in the OPPO Ace2 decreases battery life to about 91% after 800 cycles.
It only shows that high-power charging technologies are far from perfection. With such drastic improvement comes with a downside. At the end of the day, it still depends on your preference as a user.
The good thing now is that we’re not limited to only one charging technology. OPPO also launched its 50W and 110W mini-chargers that do not affect battery capacity that much. Other brands such as Xiaomi and Honor are also on the move to their fast charging advancements. Aside from that, wireless charging is a tech that we all should watch out.
