OmniVision Technologies, Inc. has recently announced the new OV64A image sensor that sports a 64MP resolution at 1.0 micron.
The OV64A image sensor is equipped with large optics and high resolution that provides premium low light performance for both wide and ultrawide main cameras for high-end smartphones. It comes with a class-leading optical format of 1/1.34-inch. It features 3-exposure, 4-cell HDR with on-chip combination and tone mapping, as well as a high-speed frame rate that works in tandem to eliminate motion artifacts and deliver 64MP signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This sensor also provides a 2- and 3-exposure staggered HDR timing option, giving smartphone designers maximum flexibility to select the best HDR method.
Geared with OmniVision’s PureCel Plus-S stacked die technology, the OV64A integrates an on-chip, 4-cell (4C) color filter array, and hardware remosaic provides high quality, 64MP Bayer output, or 8K video in real-time. When it comes to low light capability, this sensor uses near-pixel binning to output a 16MP image for 4K2K video four times the sensitivity. This yields 2.0 micron-equivalent low-light performance for preview and video. The OV64A can consistently capture the highest quality images and enable 2x digital crop zoom with 16MP resolution and fast mode switch.
The output formats include 64MP at 15 frames per second (fps), 16MP with 4C binning at 60 fps, and 4K2K video at 120 fps with the extra-pixels required for electronic image stabilization. This sensor also gives 8K video at 30 fps, 1080p at 240 fps, and 720p at 480 fps. More of its features include CPHY and DPHY interfaces and 4C half-shield phase-detection for fast autofocus support.
OV64A samples are now available while the mass production is expected later this year.
