Malacañang, through spokesperson Harry Roque, concurred with the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) that the internet speed in the Philippines is ‘not that bad.’
Gregorio Honasan, the incumbent DICT secretary, remarked at a House budget hearing last Tuesday that the mobile connection speed in the country is 3 to 7 megabits per second on average. That, to him, means the country is performing not too badly in comparison with other Southeast Asian countries.

In a Thursday press briefing, Roque made a similar remark in agreement with Honasan. The former also noted that the country’s internet speed is actually higher than the latter’s conservative estimate. But considering the delayed opening of classes in relation to Internet access, Roque clarified that there’s always room for improvement.
In response, Senator Panfilo Lacson said that, instead of having a “not so bad” performance, the Philippine internet should realistically at least reach a “good enough” level, what with virtual communication for both school and work being indispensable amid the coronavirus pandemic
As of August, the Philippines ranks 119th globally in terms of mobile Internet speeds.
