Following Facebook’s recent takedown of pro-government posts and pages, Malacañang through spokesperson Harry Roque is calling for new policies and possible legislation to regulate the top social network in the Philippines.

In Tuesday’s press briefing, Roque said Facebook began as a means to connect with friends and family but had since then been used for politics. He further said that with the way Facebook is changing new policies are required to have a “level playing field.” Roque also cited that the Facebook founder himself, Mark Zuckerberg, has previously acknowledged the need for regulation.

President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday also questioned what the point of Facebook would be in the country if it could not help protect government interests.

Hands Off Our Children, an advocacy page found to be run by PNP and AFP personnel, was recently removed by Facebook. The act was subsequently denounced by Duterte and the military.
