In its efforts to support the government in stopping online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC), internet service provider PLDT has blocked over 2,900 websites that have been identified to be sources and/or distributors of child pornography.

Per PLDT’s chief information security officer, Angel Redoble, the telco has blocked at least 12 billion attempts by its subscribers to access sites with OSEC last July alone. That figure is found to be 24 times more than the total blocked attempts for the first quarter of 2020.

Data from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also show that cases of OSEC are on the rise. The lockdown has been attributed as one major factor in the increased OSEC activities.

Besides actively identifying and blocking websites with child pornography, PLDT is seeking amendments to the Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009. Through its position paper that is submitted to the Department of Justice, the telco wants clarification on how it can actively monitor and report to the authorities users who are engaged in OSEC without violating these users’ right to privacy.

Concerned, ordinary netizens can help combat child pornography by reporting cases to the Philippine National Police text hotline 7444-64.
