It appears that the games for next-gen consoles will be more expensive than those of the current generations.
The first officially priced next-gen title was the NBA 2K21. The current generation (PS4, Xbox One, etc.) version of the game has a price of Php3,190 or USD59.99 in the US, launching on September 4. On the other hand, the next-gen version for the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X will be at Php3,690 or USD69.99, coming out this holiday season. That’s a Php500 price increase.
As per IDG Consulting, upcoming games from different publishers might also have a price hike. This is due to the substantial increase in game development costs, which was said to be up by 300%.
This fact isn’t surprising since, based on the early teasers that we already saw, the games coming to the PS5 and Xbox Series X will have way better graphics, new controller tricks, performance increase, and more.
The price increase in games will also help game publishers’ business improve. As per Shawn Layden, Sony Interactive Entertainment ex-president, USD59.99 have been the games’ price point for years and have become really unsustainable as game production costs have gone up ten times.
Hopefully, the price hike will actually be worth it and games will really take full advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s new features like 8K TV support, 129Hz 4K, adaptive controller triggers, and more.
