The Malacañang will be relying on the National Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) assessment if top telcos Smart and Globe did improve their services before the year ends.

If you remember, in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) back in July, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte demanded local telcos to improve their services before the year ends or face closure.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that his office is trying to contact Gamaliel Cordoba, NTC Commissioner, to check if Globe and PLDT-Smart did improve their services.

This is just one of the initiatives the government is doing to improve internet services in the Philippines. And considering the new era we’re in, the timing can never be more important.

The push is significant since a recent study reveals that most Philippine households still don’t have internet access.

Roque added that telcos have no more excuse for lousy services. Back in July, the Philippine government made it easier to acquire permits for building common towers. There are even talks about streamlining permits for fiber cable rollout, too.

As for the telcos side, we’ve heard reports lately of names like PLDT ramping up their infrastructure development to improve their services. Just recently, PLDT-Smart has added 259 5G base stations and adding 500,000 fiber ports.

Globe is also doing their part and has been adding new locations in its 5G coverage list.

Still, it’s yet to be known if the changes have been felt and will pass the government’s request.
