Qualcomm announced its latest SoC, the Snapdragon 870 5G. The new chipset is essentially the Snapdragon 865+ only better, sitting just below the new Snapdragon 888.
Qualcomm and TSMC found a way to get that extra performance from the 7nm node, resulting in a clock speed of 3.2Ghz, the fastest right now for mobile phones that surpasses even the Kirin 9000 powering the Huawei Mate 40 series.
Despite the speed, the new chip is not on equal terms with Snapdragon 888, which offers more performance even with lower clock speeds because of the newer Cortex-X1 cores. The Snapdragon 870 has Kryo 585 cores based on ARM Cortex-A77.
As for the GPU, it is paired with an Adreno 650, the same one on the Snapdragon 865 and 865+. Its not clear if it received a boost, but its likely unchanged seeing as the Hexagon 698 and Tensor Accelerator remain at 15 TOPS. In contrast the Adreno 660 on the Snapdragon 888 delivers 26 TOPS.
The Spectra 480 ISP is also largely same, supporting up to 200MP, 8K video at 30fps, 4K at 120fps, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. It will also come with an external Snapdragon X55 5G modem with sub-6 and mmWave support.
Smartphone brands confirmed to use the upcoming Snapdragon 870 chipset are OnePlus, OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo’s iQOO, and Motorola.
On the other side of the spectrum, Qualcomm also launched Snapdragon 480, bringing 5G to budget devices.
