Qualcomm announces its latest budget SoC, the Snapdragon 480, bringing 5G to more affordable smartphones. The latest chipset is built on an 8nm process and promises better performance compared to its predecessor.
Despite the budget status, the Snapdragon 480 comes with an integrated Snapdragon X51 Modem which supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. The modem, Qualcomm claims, can reach download speeds of up to 2.5Gbps and uploads of up to 660Mbps on 5G.
As for performance, it has eight cores with two 2GHz high performance Cortex A76 cores and six 1.8GHz power efficiency Cortex A55 cores. It also comes with an Adreno 619 GPU. According to Qualcomm, they have increased both CPU and GPU performance by over 100 percent, meaning the budget chip is capable of performing close to the Snapdragon 730G normally found on more expensive devices.

With that, we should expect budget 5G phones early this year from the likes of realme, OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo, Nokia, and more.
