There’s much reason to look forward to in 2021. While the obvious is the arrival of vaccines to combat COVID-19, there’s also the start of operations of two new telcos, RED Broadband and DITO Telecommunity, providing more online and telecom solutions to consumers.

The head of the National Telecommunications Commission, Gamaliel Cordoba, said that RED and DITO will enter the market to challenge the duopoly of Globe and Smart. He made the remark in a Senate hearing on Monday that focused on extending the franchise of DITO by 25 years.

Cordoba further stated DITO is seen as a genuine disruptor to the status quo in the telecoms industry, with Globe and Smart noted to be more aggressive in spending to improve their network infrastructure.

With the expected intense competition in 2021, Cordoba hopes this will lead to better, more efficient services for Filipinos. As of August, the Philippines lags behind its neighbors in Internet quality.
