With their budget status, it’s no surprise that both devices only has polycarbonate bodies. This is the same material used in more expensive midrange devices, so we’ll accept that. What’s interesting is, they both use Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the front to protect against minor scratches.
As for the actual design, well, it will be up to you to decide. The Realme 6i features a bamboo-like pattern on the back that was designed by Naoto Fukasawa, a Japanese industrial designer.
You can get it in Green Tea and White Milk with a matte panel that doesn’t attract fingerprint marks.
On the other hand, the Redmi 9 has a more traditional glass-like texture, which is more prone to fingerprint marks. It also has a premium look, with a rounded design on the back similar to the Redmi K30 series. You can get it in Ocean Green, Sunset Purple, and Carbon Grey.
The two share identical weight, since they both come with 5,020mAh battery. But the Redmi 9 is a bit thinner, while the Realme 6i is narrower and taller.
Both the Redmi 9 and Realme 6i have a screen that is about 6.5-inch in size, with a standard 89% screen-to-body ratio with ultra-thin bezels.
The Redmi 9 was able to take the win thanks to its FHD+ resolution. Other than beating the Realme 6i’s HD+ screen, it is by itself a great value feature for a device at this price.
Both devices also have a single bottom-firing speaker and a headphone jack. But to keep their prices down, they won’t come with free earphones.
With the intense competition between Redmi and Realme, it looks like both of these devices were made to go head to head with each other. A big evidence to that is the processor they’re using.
Both the Redmi 9 and Realme 6i come with the new MediaTek Helio G80 octa-core processor. This is a latest gaming chipset made for entry-level smartphones. To give you an idea about its performance, we got a score of 201,931 in AnTuTu in our Realme 6i hands-on review.
The two also come with 3GB and 4GB RAM options. But since it’s more expensive, the Realme 6i starts with 64GB of storage, while the competition has 32GB.
Other than the storage options, another reason why the Realme 6i is more expensive is the cameras. This thing comes with a 16-megapixel selfie camera, while the Redmi 9 only has 8-megapixel.
On the back, the 6i also has a 48-megapixel main shooter, while the Redmi 9 only has 13-megapixel. Albeit, they both come with 8-megapixel ultra-wide cameras, macro, and depth sensors.
The two share an identical pair of 5,000mAh batteries, although the the Redmi 9 is a tad bit larger at 5,020mAh.
To make its price justifiable, the Realme 6i has a faster 18W charger included. The Redmi 9 also supports this standard, but only comes with a 10W charger in the box.
The Realme 6i also has a reverse charging feature, which lets you use it as a power bank to share the battery with friends. We suspect the Redmi 9 also has this feature, but no official mention on its webpage.
As what we’ve been saying, both the Redmi 9 and Realme 6i are pretty similar. Thanks to the advancements in technology, they now have connectivity features that we only saw on more expensive devices before.
There’s the Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, and runs on Android 10 with their respective interfaces. However, the Redmi 9 do have an IR blaster, giving it a minor edge. It will let you control your non-smart devices and appliances.
