Like what we said before, design is subjective. It may look good for you, but not on other people. But this time around, I think we can all agree that the Redmi Note 9 Pro looks more attractive than the Samsung Galaxy M31.
Just like the Redmi Note 9, it features a glass-like back panel that looks flashy and really premium. There’s also the unique camera design back here.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy M31 retains the slightly outdated aesthetic of the M-series. The camera placement was a bit changed, but the overall dark glossy finish looks less imaginative than the competition.
Xiaomi also nailed the display on the Redmi Note 9 Pro. It comes with a 6.67-inch FHD+ IPS screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 5.
On the other hand, the Galaxy M31 uses a smaller 6.4-inch screen with an inferior Gorilla Glass 3 protection. But to Samsung’s credit, it does use a Super AMOLED panel, which provides more vibrant colors and deeper contrast that the IPS panel of the former.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor, with Adreno 618 GPU, 6GB of RAM, and an option between 64GB and 128GB of storage. On the other hand, the Galaxy M31 comes with an Exynos 9611 chipset, with a Mali-G72 MP3, 6GB RAM, and 128GB of storage.
If performance is your top priority, then going with the Redmi Note 9 Pro is the obvious choice. The Snapdpragon 720G chipset has better CPU, GPU, AI engine, ISP, and more, than the Exynos 9611 of the competition. This results to overall better performance — from gaming, daily tasks, taking pictures, and more.
This is where the Samsung Galaxy M31 is trying to keep up. Just like the Redmi Note 9 Pro, it comes with a 64-megapixel main shooter, 8-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel macro, and a depth sensor. It also has a 32-megapixel selfie camera, while the Note 9 Pro only has 16-megapixel.
However, the Redmi Note 9 Pro gets a one-up thanks to its extra shooting modes that are missing on the Galaxy M31. There’s the 120fps slow-mo, 960fps slow-mo, and based on our personal experience, better night mode, and AI scene detection.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 has a 6,000mAh battery, which is obviously much larger than the 5,020mAh battery of the Redmi Note 9 Pro. Expect longer battery life out of the Galaxy M31 — possibly up to two days with light to moderate usage.
But to Redmi’s credit, the Note 9 Pro does have 30W fast charging, which should be way faster than the 15W of the competition.
Xiaomi clearly put a lot of attention to detail on the Redmi Note 9 Pro, than what Samsung did on the Galaxy M31. For starters, there’s the side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which provides a cleaner look than the rear-mounted one.
The punch-hole on the screen also feels more modern than having a thick notch. An IR blaster that lets you control non-smart appliences and an official splash-proof nano-coating for extra peace of mind.
Getting the Redmi Note 9 Pro over the Galaxy M31 is a no-brainer. For the same price of Php13,990, you’re getting a more powerful processor on the Note 9 Pro, which should be great in gaming and other tasks. It also has a more premium and cleaner design, camera features, faster charging, splash protection, and larger screen with tougher glass protection.
