Research by cybersecurity solution provider Check Point has recently found vulnerabilities on Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.

The research, dubbed as Achilles, found more than 400 lines of vulnerable codes within the digital signal processor (DSP) of a Qualcomm chipset. A DSP is a system on a chip used in smartphones to optimize wired quick charging, as well as multimedia (HD Capture and advanced AR function), and audio capabilities.

Check Point revealed that threats discovered may turn the smartphones into a spying tool, allowing attackers to access important information such as photos and videos in the gallery. They may also record calls,  access the smartphone’s microphone, and track location in real-time. They may also make the phone unresponsive and remove photos, videos, and contacts stored on the phone. Hackers may also implant malware on the smartphone, hide their activities, and make it unremovable.

Check Point did not mention the model of Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset that the company tested, keeping the full technical details on these vulnerabilities to minimize exploits. The company also informed Qualcomm about its research and has been working to fix the issue. The latter also has notified smartphone brands.
