A bill that has passed the Russian parliament’s lower house, if passed into law, could see the government having the power to sanction internet-based platforms, like Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube, that censor contents shared by its citizens.

In a statement released by the parliament, it spoke of giving authorities the capacity to target internet-based platforms that limit information, based on language or nationality.

Aside from social media, the bill also seeks to target especially websites that are deemed “discriminative” against Russian media, drawing from multiple complaints about instances of censored content by platforms that are US-based.

Just earlier in 2020, the aforementioned platforms implemented a tag that uniquely identifies a media outlet according to their affiliated government.

Having entered the upper house, the bill is just a step away before reaching Russian President Vladimir Putin and signing it into a law.

Reports about the topic, however, are pessimistic, suggesting the event as mere formalities and is something that will contradict the government’s effort to control Russian contents in a supposed initiative to “combat online extremism.”
