No matter how advanced their flagship releases get, Samsung is still making entry-level devices for those who want to have a Galaxy experience, without the sky-high price tag.

Recently, we’ve seen the release of the Samsung Galaxy A11 in the Philippines. Priced at under Php8,000, it was made for those who are on a tight budget who are looking for their first smartphone, or as a communication device for home school/work as we enter the new normal.

However, Samsung is facing tough competition from the Chinese players. One of them is Redmi, who has the Redmi 9 penetrating the same price range.

Design

As we always say, smartphone designs is subjective and differs to everyone. But in this case, I guess we can all agree that the Redmi 9 looks so much better than the Samsung Galaxy A11.

It features a shiny, glass-like polycarbonate material that looks more premium than the plastic matte design of the competition.

The Ocean Green, Sunset Purple, and Carbon Grey gradient designs of the Redmi 9 looks more imaginative than the plain colors of the Galaxy A11.

But to Samsung’s credit, the A11 does use a punch-hole instead of a waterdrop notch for the selfie camera, creating a more cleaner and modern look.

Display and Audio

It may have a punch-hole, but that doesn’t mean the Galaxy A11 has a better screen. As you can see, it only has an HD+ TFT panel, while the Redmi 9 already has a sharper FHD+ IPS panel — that, by itself, is already a nice feat for the price.

This basically means that everything will look sharper on the Redmi 9, which is important considering its size. With the A11’s 268ppi, those with keen eyes can notice the lack of detail, especially on small texts.

As a cherry on top, the Redmi 9 is covered with Gorilla Glass 3. Samsung, as usual, didn’t bother to mention what glass they used on their entry-level phone. We can only guess that it’s inferior to Corning’s.

As for audio, both devices have 3.5mm jacks on the bottom to plug your earphones in. Their speakers are also down there but don’t expect great sound quality out of them.

Processor

Other than the front glass, Samsung didn’t bother to mention what processor they used on the Galaxy A11. Although, they did say it comes with a 1.8GHz octa-core chipset.

With that, it’s safe to say that the Redmi 9 also won this round. The MediaTek Helio G80 on this thing has a higher clock at 2.0GHz and was specifically made to handle games well.

For the same price, the Redmi 9 already has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. On the other hand, the Galaxy A11 is only available in 3GB/32GB configuration.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy A11 and Redmi 9 had a close fight in this round, but ultimately, the Redmi 9 took the win.

Both devices come with 8-megapixel selfie and 13-megapixel primary cameras. In fact, the Galaxy A11 managed to have a brighter f/1.8 aperture, while the other only has f/2.2.

But where the Redmi 9 shines is in the flexibility. There’s the sharper 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Plus, the addition of a 5-megapixel macro camera, which is missing on the Galaxy A11.

Battery

With its bigger 5,020mAh battery, the Redmi 9 obviously wins this round. That capacity is noticeably larger than the 4,000mAh battery of the Galaxy A11.

However, Samsung’s offering already comes with a 15W fast charger, while the Redmi 9 only has 10W despite its 18W fast charging support.

Others

With its newer processor, the Redmi 9 gets to have Bluetooth 5.0, which has improved stability and power efficiency. It also has an IR blaster that allows you to control your non-WiFi home appliances. But if you want dual-band WiFi, look elsewhere neither of them has it.

On the upside, both devices come with USB Type-C for modern connectivity. Plus, they run on the latest Android 10 operating system with their respective interfaces on top.

Conclusion

I guess we have a clear winner here. For the same price, the Redmi 9 has a more attractive design, sharper screen, faster processor, additional cameras, larger battery, and extras like an IR blaster.

What’s interesting is, for the same price of Php7,490, the Redmi 9 already has 4GB/64GB of storage. On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy A11 only has a 3GB/32GB configuration — the same config of the Redmi 9 base model, which retails at a cheaper price of Php6,990.
