Originally rumored to be taking steps towards 6G, Samsung is taking the lead towards the successor to 5G by publishing a white paper, laying out possibilities involving the breakthrough technology.

Essentially improving on what both 4G and 5G is capable of, 6G is expectedly “blazing-fast” in terms of internet speed. By this, the company expects that it would display a peak rate of 1000Gbps that goes in contrast with 5G which, on paper, is only capable of 20Gbps at best.

Then, there are the factors of latency and reliability, which are anticipated to also be improvements over the existing technology that will be supplanted.

As such, a below 10 millisecond latency for user experience and a sub-100 microseconds for air latency—significantly contrasting 5G’s 1 millisecond. As for reliability, 6G is being developed to be ten times more reliable in latency-sensitive areas, relative to 5G.

With some substantial predicted improvements over 5G, the 6G technology breaks boundaries that facilitates new and better possibilities.

One of such probability would be “mixed reality” or XR, which is a fusion between Artificial Reality and Virtual Reality.

In addition, streaming AR at 8K will also be a “truly immersive” experience with 6G, given its minimum speed requirement of 0.44 Gbps. The same is also true with VR whose basic requirement is a stable and speedy internet at 0.9 Gbps.

Going further, we could also see adoption of an almost life-like holograms and Digital Replica/Digital Twin technologies, which, according to the company, would require several Tbps to sustain.

Lastly, Samsung also predicts of the potential integration of Artificial Intelligence with 6G.

6G-release-date

At this point, we are still seeing the advent for 5G, and it will be several years from now before all these predictions can take place. Samsung, for its part, claims that it will take at least 2028 to see the “earliest commercialization” and until 2030 to see massive implementation of 6G.
