Philippine Senator Grace Poe expressed her enthusiasm about Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service and what it can do in the country.
As per the senator, Starlink coming in as a new telco player in the Philippines could “vastly” improve the country’s internet service.
For those who are unfamiliar, Starlink is an upcoming internet service that will use satellite to provide internet service. Last November 24, with the help of SpaceX, another Elon Musk company for aerospace equipment and transportation, launched Starlink satellites into space.
Subscribers will need a special type of satellite attached to their home, which will connect directly to those in space.
Starlink’s target is to launch 12,000 satellites into the earth’s low orbit, which will provide high-speed, low-latency, and affordable internet access.
Just recently, Sen. Koko Pimentel III revealed that he had a meeting with SpaceX VP Patricia Cooper discussing Starlink’s possible entrance into the Philippines.
Its wireless nature would be very beneficial, especially in remote areas in the Philippines. But the thing is, being a new technology, it will not come cheap. As of writing, users have to pay USD500, or around Php25,000 upfront, to obtain the equipment to be set up on their home.
But like most new technology, once more people adopt it and Starlink gains more subscribers, Sen. Poe believes that the cost will go down eventually.
