Astronomers have found six galaxies trapped in the cosmic “spider’s web” of a large black hole.
Experts believed that black holes from early history came from the collapse of the first stars. However, astronomers can’t figure out how they expanded into giants.
With this newly discovered black hole — which is said to have existed less than billions years old — weighs about a billion times than our Sun. It was spotted by the European Southern Observatory (ESO) using Very Large Telescope (VLT).
The discovery will help experts learn how supermassive black holes, like the one we found at the center of our milky way, have developed. Astronomers believe that the filaments trapping the cluster of galaxies are carrying enough amount of gas that helps black holes grow.
“The galaxies stand and grow where the filaments cross, and streams of gas — available to fuel both the galaxies and the central supermassive black hole — can flow along the filaments.” says Marco Mignoli, a National Institute for Astrophysics astronomer that led the research.
