Smart Communications, Inc. has rolled out a simpler and safer process of upgrading SIMs to LTE.

The LTE SIM upgrade keeps Smart subscribers safe from cyber scams by eliminating the need for a PIN to upgrade their non-LTE SIM. This also adds another layer of security between the phone and the SIM, ensuring that the request is done by the owner.

The initiative was made since there have been reports of a significant increase in “SIM-hijacking”, or the transferring of one’s existing mobile number to another SIM since the start of the Enhanced Community Quarantine last March 2020. This fraudulent act steals an individual’s mobile identity and grants access to sensitive accounts.

This usually happens when SIM-hijackers trick their target to send a PIN request and give them the requested OTP (one-time password) to activate the new SIM in their possession and take over their victim’s banking, email, and online
accounts.  Through the new process for LTE SIM upgrades, such tactics have now been effectively blocked.

To check if your Smart SIM is LTE-ready,  simply text SIMCHECK to 5832 for free. Smart subscribers can avail of the LTE SIM upgrade at Smart Stores, Sun Shops, malls, convenience stores, telco shops, and partner retailers nationwide.

Subscribers may also have the SIM delivered to their homes through the Smart Online Store.

Smart also reminds its subscribers to stay vigilant and never give any sensitive information to strangers. To report suspected SIM-hijacking incidents, Smart subscribers can call the Smart Customer Service Hotline via  *888.
