Smartphone market bounced back in Q4 2020 with Apple taking the lead - Android

Research firm IDC happily reported that worldwide smartphone shipments have started to bounce back in the third quarter of 2020. That’s from October 1 to December 31.

The entire market collectively shipped 385.9 million units, with Apple taking the lead by owning 90.1 million of it. That’s a 23.4% piece of the pie. The sales were fueled by the iPhone 12 series that came out in October. Apple’s sales this quarter was higher than last year as it was able to gain 22.2% YOY growth.

It’s followed by Samsung that shipped 73.9 million units thanks to budget devices like the Galaxy M51 and the Galaxy A series that consists of devices like the Galaxy A02s and the 5G-enabled Galaxy A42.

The top five list is completed by Chinese brands such as Xiaomi with 45.3 million, OPPO with 33.8 million, and the troubled Huawei at 32.3 million.

All in all, the market grew by 4.3% in Q4 compared to the same quarter last year.

But despite the strong Q4 sales, the disappointing previous months dragged the numbers for 2020. As per IDC, shipments dropped by 6% than in 2019.

Apple may have reigned in Q4, but overall, Samsung has the most shipped smartphones in 2020 with 266.7 million units. Apple came in second at 206.1 million, and Huawei below it with 189 million.

All in all, there were 1.29 billion smartphones shipped in 2020. That’s 5.9% lower than 2019’s figures of 1.37 billion units.
