The display technology in smartphones has drastically improved over the years. We’re now in the era of high-resolution displays with really thin bezels. But device makers are now moving beyond that and have recently introduced smartphones with high refresh rates for smoother animations. If you’re wondering what those smartphones are, then take a look below.

Before we dive in, the refresh rate is the number of times a screen refreshes images in a second written in Hz or Hertz. Most smartphones have a refresh rate of 60Hz. A display with a higher refresh rate like 90Hz or 120Hz will provide smoother animations, which is nice to look at.

ASUS ROG Phone (90Hz)

The ASUS ROG Phone launched in 2018 and is the brand’s first gaming phone. It sports a 6-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 90Hz refresh rate. It features a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB RAM, up to 512GB UFS 2.1, dual rear cameras, vapor-chamber cooling system, and a 4,000mAh battery.

Razer Phone 2 (120Hz)

Also launched in 2018, the Razer Phone 2 is the company’s gaming smartphone just like the ROG Phone, and inherits the 120Hz refresh rate of the original Razer Phone in 2017. It features a 5.7-inch QHD IGZO display. a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB RAM, 64GB storage, dual rear cameras, cooling chamber system, and 4,000mAh battery.

Sharp Aquos R3 (120Hz)

You can count on Japan to get the good stuff like the Sharp Aquos R3 announced in May 2019. It has a 6.2-inch QHD+ Pro IGZO display with 120Hz refresh rate. It features the newer Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB RAM, 128GB storage, dual-rear cameras, and 3,200mAh battery.

ZTE nubia Red Magic 3 (90Hz)

Another gaming smartphone that features a high refresh rate screen is the ZTE nubia Red Magic 3. It has a 6.65-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate. It features a Snapdragon 855 chipset, up to 12GB RAM, up to 256GB storage, an active liquid-cooling with turbo fan (Yes! It has a built-in fan!), and a massive 5,000mAh battery.

OnePlus 7 Pro (90Hz)

One of the newest smartphones to feature that said screen technology is the OnePlus 7 Pro. It has a 6.67-inch QHD+ Fluid AMOLED display with 90Hz and support for HDR10+. This is also the smartphone with the most immersive display in the list as it doesn’t sport any notch or thick bezel. It features a Snapdragon 855 chipset, up to 12GB RAM, up to 256GB storage, triple rear cameras, and a 4,000mAh battery with 30W Warp Charge.

And that sums it up. As of today, the highest we’ve seen in a smartphone is 120Hz. For comparison, gaming monitors nowadays can handle up to 240Hz. Do you think high refresh rates in smartphone displays is necessary? Let us know in the comments below.
