Sony Japan is getting a new budget smartphone — the Xperia 8 Lite.
The Sony Xperia 8 Lite keeps the same design and key specs of the Xperia 10 from February of last year. The only main difference here is the cameras, as it now has a brighter 12-megapixel f/1.8 main shooter (from 13MP f/2.0) and a sharper 8-megapixel (from 5MP ultra-wide) secondary camera. The use of the secondary camera is unclear, but it seems to be a special depth sensor.
Under the hood, it’s still powered by an aging Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, built from a 14nm process. The memory was upgraded to 4GB from 3GB, but it still has 64GB of expandable storage and a 2,870mAh battery that charges by USB Type-C.
What’s more disappointing is, it still ships with Android 9 Pie installed. Whether or not it will be updated to Android 10 or the upcoming Android 11 is still uncertain.
On the front, there’s Sony’s signature 21:9 tall aspect ratio screen. It’s has a compact 6-inch size with a FHD+ pixel resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. There’s a thick bezel on top of it for the 8-megapixel selfie camera.
The Sony Xperia 8 Lite has a price of JPY29,800 (around Php13,700) and is available in Japan’s MVNO Nuro Mobile. Pre-order is now available and will ship on September 1.
