Sony shipped over 4.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide in 2020. The company revealed in a recently published earnings report. That number is comparable to the PlayStation 4’s which also shipped 4.5 million units in its launch quarter.

The Q3 2020 was the best quarter in PlayStation history. Sony’s Game & Network Services segment reported a Q3 2020 revenue of 883.2 billion yen (USD 8.4 billion), up by 40-percent year-on-year. The operating income was also up 80.2 billion yen (USD 767 million), up by 50-percent year-on-year. The increases was largely due to the PlayStation 5 and strong software and network sales.

The report also highlights the continuous decline for demand of the PlayStation 4. The console shipped 1.4 million units in Q3 2020. In comparison, it shipped 6 million units in Q3 2019.

Despite the number, the PS5 remains extremely hard to find on official sales channels in the Philippines since it became available in the country.

Limited supply, compounded by scalpers made the situation worse. Using programs, scalpers were able to quickly snatch up units as soon as it was posted on legitimate online retailers’ websites. The consoles are then sold on the Facebook Marketplace, Lazada and Shopee at two to three times the regular price.

A t the time of this article, the supply situation of the PS5 in the country remains the same. Its still difficult to get one.
