After several years of active service to gamers, Sony is finally closing down on its PlayStation Network Store for the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita.
Word about the imminent closure came from TheGamer, citing unnamed sources that claim that the digital storefront for the aforementioned platforms is shutting down for good.
As per the report, the PlayStation 3 console and PlayStation Portable will see the platforms’ online contents permanently inaccessible beginning July 2, 2021, followed by the handheld follow-up (PS Vita) on August 27, 2021.
This means, apart from the games in each platform’s library, especially indie and digital-exclusive ones, downloadable contents will no longer be accessible online.
To be fair, Sony has been slowly phasing out its old platforms since 2015, but was not until 2017 when the PlayStation 3 was officially discontinued. The PlayStation Vita, which saw early commercialization in 2011, was officially ended in March of 2019.
