Design and Build Quality

A smartphone’s design shouldn’t really matter much, especially at this price. But the good thing is, TECNO Mobile and Xiaomi did their best still make their budget releases look interesting.

The TECNO Spark 5 Pro features fancy-looking but worn-out glass-like design with tons of reflection, and a color gradient paint job. It officially comes in five different colors, but only two were brought in the country. On the upside, it does have a punch-hole for the selfie camera, which is rare on devices at this price.

Personally, we prefer the matte and bright design of the Redmi 9C. Instead of pretending to be glass, this plastic material has a textured finish. It’s available in bright colors: Sunrise Orange, Twilight Blue, and a more subtle Midnight Grey.

As for the build, both smartphones have a plastic body — no surprises there. You might want to slap in a protective case, which comes in the box of the Spark 5 Pro. It appears the Redmi 9C doesn’t come with one, so you have to get it separately.

Display and Audio

Here’s a clear win for the TECNO Spark 5 Pro. It has a 6.6-inch screen, which is a tad bit larger than the 6.53-inch on the former. It also has the aforementioned punch-hole cutout for the selfie cam. It looks more futuristic but can be more distracting than the traditional notch that the Redmi 9C has.

Other than that, the screen specs are pretty much the same. They both have the standard HD+ resolution that we see on sub-Php5,000 phones.

They also come with headphone jacks, single bottom-firing loudspeakers, and FM radio if you need it.

Processor and Hardware

The Redmi 9C features a MediaTek Helio G35 octa-core processor. A newer chipset than the Helio P22 processor of the TECNO Spark 5 Pro. Their differences are neck and neck but with slight advantage on the Helio G35.

However, the bigger 4GB RAM on the Spark 5 Pro might give it a slight boost in performance as the 9C settles for 2GB/3GB of memory. As for storage, both devices come with 64GB of capacity. But the 9C do have a cheaper 32GB variant.

Moreover, both devices have 4G connectivity if you don’t have WiFi at home. Plus, rear-mounted fingerprint scanners, which are rare on entry-level smartphones. Also, the Redmi 9C has an IR blaster if you want to control non-smart TV or any IR-enabled appliances.

Camera

Here’s a clear win for the TECNO Spark 5 Pro. It sports a 16-megapixel primary camera with a bright aperture of f/1.8 and three more lenses. The Redmi 9C only has a 13-megapixel f/2.2, and two more cameras next to it.

On the front, the Spark 5 Pro also has a sharper 8-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls. The Redmi 9C then settles for a 5-megapixel sensor.

Battery

Almost all sub-Php5,000 smartphones come with 5,000mAh batteries to compensate for their overall lack of flare, and both the TECNO Spark 5 Pro and Redmi 9C have it.

They also share the same 10W chargers. Definitely not the fastest around, but should be enough to get the job done.

Conclusion

The TECNO Spark 5 Pro was announced with a Php5,490 price tag, to which you can use a special promo voucher to get a Php500 discount. But as of writing, it’s listed in Shopee for Php5,999. Not sure if it’s an error, but that doesn’t affect the fact that it have won this specs battle to the Redmi 9C.

Xiaomi’s budget offering starts at Php5,290 for the 2GB/32GB, while the Php5,990 variant comes with 3GB/64GB. For a similar price, the Spark 5 Pro already comes with 4GB of memory.

It also has a larger screen and sharper front and rear cameras. Those features should be enough to compensate for the difference in performance between the Helio P22 and Helio G35 — which is neck and neck, after all.
