Filipinos on their mobile devices need to be more aware and vigilant against digital threats. According to cybersecurity company Kasperky, the top five most common mobile malware in the Philippines are all Trojans.

Trojans are malicious software that dupes victims into installing them by posing as legitimate applications. Once a Trojan malware has managed to infect a device and activate, it is capable of causing damage to the mobile user. To name a few, Trojan malware can spy on the victim’s activities, modify and copy sensitive files and data, and slow down the overall performance of the infected device.

In no specific order, the top Trojan malware that are spreading in the Philippines are Trojan droppers and Trojan downloaders. They are basically malware that surreptitiously downloads and installs more malware into the device. There’s also the SMS Trojan, which allows cybercriminals to send and intercept messages via the phone’s text messaging feature, and the proxy Trojan, which allows criminals to use infected devices to stage anonymous attacks.

The rest of the Trojan malware that’s prevalent in Filipino mobile users is placed under the generic Trojan type. While it’s the most basic type, generic Trojan can still steal information and disrupt device performance.

Estimates put the number of mobile users in the Philippines at 73.91 million. That’s equivalent to 67% of the country’s total population. Of these users, 85.7% have installed shopping apps on their devices, and 42.1% have banking apps. Apps in these categories heavily rely on confidential, financial information, which is basically a treasure trove for cybercriminals to plunder.

Kaspersky has further revealed that Android users are most at risk against malware, with 98% of recent malware designed for Google’s operating system. In 2020, Kaspersky detected 55,622 attempts of infections that targeted Filipino mobile users.
