Toshiba has recently transferred its remaining shares of Dynabook to Sharp, ending its 35 years in the laptop business.

Formerly owned by Toshiba, the Dynabook is the brand’s lineup of consumer laptops. It was the same brand that launched the Toshiba T1100, the world’s first laptop, in 1985. Toshiba had used its brand name since 1989, but Dynabook only became the worldwide brand in 2019. In 2018, Sharp acquired about 80.1% of the company shares. This left the minor shares to Toshiba at 19.9%.

With the transfer, Dynabook has now become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sharp.

As Sharp fully takes over the Dynabook, the brand may integrate some of its technologies from its premium TVs and smartphone displays.
