Xiaomi has officially introduced its first quad-curved waterfall screen concept smartphone.

Featuring an 88° hyper quad-curved screen design, the visual interfaces flow over the phone’s surface like water. The screen covers almost the entire smartphone frame, while its body carries no ports or buttons, bringing forward the futuristic unibody no-port design.

According to Xiaomi, since flexible displays are part of the new normal, the biggest challenge in producing the industry’s first quad-curved waterfall screen was not bending the display, but rather in manufacturing an 88° quad-curved glass panel, including the 3D bonding process. Compared with ordinary curved glass, the challenge of hot bending increases sharply.

Moreover, polishing a hyper-curved glass with a deep 88° bend on four sides demands self-developed glass processing equipment, hot bending under 800°C high temperature and pressure, four different polishing tools, and up to more than ten complex polishing procedures. Also, behind such a piece of glass are thousands of trials.

An innovative screen stacking design was reared through our breakthrough 3D bonding process to attach such a piece of 88° quad-curved glass to a flexible display. Xiaomi claims that all of this ensures perfect and flawless screen performance.

Furthermore, this features a no-port design, which is identified as a new direction for future smartphones. With Xiaomi’s new inventions in quad-curved waterfall displays, new potentialities are progressed, and critical advances are made towards the aim of a port-free unibody smartphone.

This innovative design ensures that the display covers nearly all sides of the phone. Meanwhile, Xiaomi acknowledged 46 self-developed patented technologies. With these, physical ports and buttons can have their functions replicated by alternatives. Nevertheless, as an intuitive device, this smartphone boasts ultra-thin piezoelectric ceramics, an industry-first flexible film display acoustic technology, third-generation under-display cameras, wireless charging, eSIM chips, pressure-sensitive touch sensors, and the like.
