An MIUI tipster/leaker has uncovered a new feature that Xiaomi is expected to unveil soon—a memory extension feature for increasing a phone’s overall RAM.

According to Kacper Skrzypek, MIUI has an unreleased feature in the Settings called Memory Extension. When enabled, the feature works by designating 1GB of the device’s storage as RAM.

As Skrzypek noted, the feature is not yet supported by commercially available Xiaomi phones, and reaching the hidden feature may require some effort.

When internal storage is used as virtual RAM, a phone has a bigger space for multitasking and can keep apps in memory longer. Naturally, this feature is only possible if there’s enough free storage space available in the device.

Xiaomi isn’t the first smartphone maker to think of the feature. Other brands, such as Oppo and Vivo, have their own implementation of memory extension. The Vivo X60 Pro Plus, for instance, can use 3GB of internal storage as virtual memory.
