Global smartphone manufacturer, vivo, highlighted its strength in the research and development of 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology, through a live demonstration of 8K ultra-high-definition video streaming powered by 5G at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2021.

vivo arranged a 5g mmWave base station that transmitted 8K UHD video from a server to a smartphone, that supported multiple 5G Sub-6GHz and mmWave frequency bands (n257/258/260/261) that used NSA dual connectivity (EN-DC). This demo highlighted vivo’s strength in the R&D of 5G and its potential for commercialization of 5G mmWave.

MWC Shanghai 2021 included a 5G mmWave Zone – jointly hosted by the organizer GSMA and its 39 partners that also included vivo, China Unicom, and Qualcomm – to exhibit possible scenarios that highlight the potential of the 5G mmWave, especially in winter sports events.

Presently, the global 5G service is mainly based on sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums. Millimeter waves are electromagnetic waves with a wavelength of 1mm to 10mm and a frequency range of 30GHz to 300GHz. The mmWave has an advantage compared to frequency bands below 6GHz such as a larger bandwidth, lower air interface delay, and more flexible air interface configuration, which effectively meet the needs of wireless communication system capacity, transmission rates, and differentiated applications.

With its huge potential and broad applications, vivo said that it will be committed to the development of 5G mmWave tech and support applications, working closely with industry partners to maximize 5G potential.
